On one side of the coin we have cases like what you outline, where justice has not been done. On the other side, you have the situation in the United States where public urinators are classified as sex offenders and treated as permanent second class citizens.

Neither situation is ideal, obviously. The trouble is, once you get absurdly harsh penalties in, no politician can ever remove them without seeming "soft on crime". Our problems with these issues in the United States are now basically unsolvable.

I appreciate that Korean media is actually outraged about this stuff and puts it out to a public audience. It gets people demanding change, and it's a slow process, but I think they're getting it. There are always going to be extreme headline-grabbing cases, and it's better the rage against them be harnessed for greater public good than demonizing a nebulous class of monstrous super-criminals (most of whom aren't even violent).

Re: Korean Supreme Court Rules That Being Drunk No Longer An Excuse For Rape

The "I was drunk" and "she didn't resist enough" defenses are hardly unique
to Korea. They're the excuses used in nearly every case of date rape, and
widespread acceptance of these myths (in the United States at least) is a big
reason why "legitimate rape" is an actual serious belief held by a large part of
the population. It's also a major reason why date rapes are only rarely brought to
trial- "he said, she said" and all that good stuff.

Also, calling either of these a "defense" is grossly misleading. They're
mitigation factors in sentencing and have no bearing on actual guilt. Mitigation
factors in American law are similarly broad, though our news rarely reports on
it. In the most extreme case I can remember, a judge simply refused to give
prison time to a man convicted of raping a prostitute, on the grounds that
prostitutes can not be raped, only "have their services stolen" i.e. petty
theft.

Anyone who thinks Korean law in this regard is uniquely horrible needs to
read up on the problems with date rape in the United States. I would be ecstatic
if our news media treated our issues as seriously as the Koreans media treats
theirs.

Re: A Profile of Korea’s “TDC Ville”

#353
I think your mammary memory is a little cloudy Doc. My unit was F Co.702nd Maint.Bn. at Camp Casey 78-79. I currently live in North Texas and lived in Garland Texas up until 2004 then moved to another North Texas city. I met my wife in TDC in 78 we married March 79. We have been married for 33 years and have two daughters together that are now in there thirties. My wife and I are devoted to each other and very much in love even after all these years and we have a wonderful marriage. We know two interracial couples that we both knew in Korea back in 79 who are still together. We are still in touch with them and visit from time to time. We would visit more often but one couple lives in Washington and the other in California. They both have grown children and are hapily married. Im not saying that there wern't some gold diggers or girls that used GI's to get to the states. What I am saying is there are plenty of us who married Korean Nationals who have had blessed long lasting mariages. I know alot of Texas women (gold diggers) who go through men till they get what they want from them and move on or get caught cheating. Its not good to generalize and sterotype people Mr RICOSNIPER.

Re: A Profile of Korea’s “TDC Ville”

#262
Hey jeff You are the whom is full of shit and BS, just as you lie to those GI's and spouses you come in contact with. Do your research right. What i said on my post was absolutely true and or not exxagerated. Go back and count the clubs and hangout joints in TDC back in the time frame i mentioned also the amount of registered hookers, drinky girls, business women, yobo or whatever you want to call them. You were probably one of those whom talked the GI into the so-called perfect marriage mr.counselor. Back in 1983-84 there was a club in Central Texas ,Ft Hood area called Jade East and while there i saw some of these girls that i had met in Korea and yes i did lay a few of them again. I met 2 while in Panama during my Training and back in Kentucky and fayetville N.C . Some were still married to their soldier husband ,just cheating a little on the side, others had divorced and married someone with more money. I say it as it is. I was in Korea only from 78 to 83 not as long as you but I knew most of what was going on. Go to Garland Texas and you will find many Korean women that lied to their GI boyfriends so they could bring them over and then leave them and establish a business with other korean counterparts in these were included contract marriages, which is a different story. They had a documentary back in 83 in a texas news station which many of these koreans were being investigated and many arrested. Get your facts straight. In Sun Shin , Ko Soon Yo, Kim Chun Hwa, Hamm Hee Yong are just 4 For now that were doing the bang ittybang over here and left their hubbies for a Hubby with more to offer. One of these married her hubby,s Doctor. Talk to ya soon. village honcho
